Bratronice between Chapels, Manor House and Cycle Route

Bratronice combines two different historical points of interest with a cycle route through the village. A chapel built in 1930 stands in the village square. The manor house is a late Renaissance building dating from 1603. Cycle Route No. 312 leads from Mečichov via Bratronice and Jindřichovice to Blatná.

Two Chapels with Different Character

The chapel in the village square stands freely within the village setting, while the Chapel of St. Joseph is located in the manor house. The Chapel of St. Joseph was extended in 1758 by a manorial oratory. An oratory is a special room for prayer and adds another historical function to the chapel.

The architectural form also makes the manor house chapel a distinctive detail. It is attached to the east side of the building and covered by a barrel vault with a lunette vault. The manor house also features the coat of arms of the Hořčice family, showing two bear paws pointing upward. The dedication, vault and coat of arms provide several specific points of reference for exploring its history.

Manor House and Garden

The manor house includes a French-style garden. It has a preserved enclosing wall with a Renaissance portal on the east side. A side entrance leads from a local street into the garden. Thus, the manor house is defined not only by its architectural form and coat of arms, but also by the connection between the garden space, wall and portal. Renaissance features can therefore be found both in the late Renaissance building and in a prominent element of the garden.

The distinction between the two chapels is also helpful for finding your way around the village: the chapel in the village square is part of a public village setting, while the Chapel of St. Joseph belongs to the manor house. This makes it possible to assign the historical details to different parts of Bratronice without confusing the buildings or their functions.

Bratronice on Cycle Route No. 312

On Cycle Route No. 312, Bratronice lies between Mečichov and Jindřichovice; the route then continues to Blatná. For a cycling tour, this sequence provides a clear sense of spatial orientation. Bratronice is therefore a place along a continuous connection, not merely a single destination. Christian Battaglia took part 25 times in the longest national cycling marathon, “Praha–Karlovy Vary–Praha”.

The route and the historic buildings appeal to different interests: cyclists can regard Bratronice as one section of the route, while those interested in architecture will find several closely connected themes in the village square, manor house, chapel and garden.

Important Limitation for Visit Planning

The manor house in Bratronice is privately owned and not open to the public. A public tour of the manor house is therefore not an option on site. Nevertheless, the chapel, coat of arms, vault form and garden remain important points of reference for placing Bratronice in its historical context. Together with the route of the cycle path, they create a village setting shaped above all by specific architecture and its location on a cycling connection.
