Prague 5: Historic Sites, Gardens and Contemporary Art
Accommodation in Prague 5
Prague 5 combines historic sites, extensive gardens and contemporary art. Bertramka, Letohrádek Portheimka, Kinský Garden and MeetFactory represent very different experiences. Especially when different interests come together in your family, you can first decide when choosing your accommodation whether historic rooms, exhibitions, gardens or modern art should be the main focus.
Historic Sites in Prague 5
Bertramka is a former estate in the Neoclassical style, surrounded by a beautiful park. The Bertramka garden includes a sala terrena with original paintings from 1700 and 1780, which serves as a concert hall. The site thus combines a former estate, historic furnishings and musical use, without the individual impressions having to be reduced to a single visiting experience.
Letohrádek Portheimka also tells the story of Prague's architectural history. It was built in 1728 by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer as a summer residence for his family. Temporary exhibitions are held in the gallery rooms on the ground and first floors. Thus, historic architecture and changing art content stand side by side at this location. Letohrádek Kinských houses, among other things, an ethnographic exhibition of the National Museum.
Gardens and Historic Landscape
Kinský Garden covers 22 hectares, making it a distinct landscape theme within Prague 5's cultural selection. Its size provides a concrete point of reference for visitors who want to consider a garden, alongside indoor spaces and exhibitions, as an important part of their travel focus.
The history of the grounds on the southern slope of Petřín dates back to 1826: on March 27, 1826, Count Rudolf Kinský purchased from entrepreneur Antonín Novotný the plots of the former Brabcovny, Štikovny, Peldřimovky and Plaské vineyards in order to build a villa and an extensive English-style park there.
Modern Art and Open-Air Cinema
MeetFactory is an independent international multifunctional center for contemporary art. It includes two galleries that provide space for critical engagement with the local and international art scene. MeetFactory thus complements the historic buildings and gardens with an explicitly contemporary perspective.
MeetFactory also includes the Zeď, which serves as a free open-air cinema from June to September. At Letní kino Kinská, the projection surface is located on the rear façade of Letohrádek Kinských. These two cinema locations set different accents: one is a seasonal use of the MeetFactory's Zeď, while the other is a projection surface on the rear façade of Letohrádek Kinských.
Cemetery Culture and Further Discoveries
A guided tour with commentary takes place every month at Malostranský hřbitov. The cemetery became a veritable gallery of cemetery sculpture from that period. This provides another cultural focus for your travel planning, clearly distinct from the galleries, summer residences and gardens.
