Sušice between the Šumava, the Otava and history

Sušice combines historic sites, viewpoints, museums and trails through the landscape into a diverse travel destination. Those wishing to combine culture and outdoor activities during a stay in the Czech Republic will find a variety of options here: the town tells the story of its regional history, while the surrounding area opens up views across the Šumava, trails to several peaks and experiences along the Otava.

Anděl Strážce Chapel on Stráž Hill

One prominent destination is Anděl Strážce Chapel, an early Baroque chapel built in 1682–1683 on Stráž Hill, offering beautiful views of Sušice and its surroundings. It was founded in 1682 by the Capuchin custos Ladislav z Bílina; on 3 August 1683, it was consecrated by the Bishop of Prague, Jan Dlouhoveský. Attached ambits were added in 1735. The main pilgrimage to the chapel currently takes place annually at the beginning of September as part of the so-called Sušická pouť, which also includes religious services. From June to the end of August, services are regularly held there on Thursday evenings.

Views and trails in the surrounding area

The Svatobor lookout tower offers panoramic views across the Šumava and into the interior of the country. For longer explorations, the Sušická pavučina is available, a network of hiking and educational trails extending for more than 30 km in the area around Sušice. The trails lead to the four peaks of Svatobor, Stráž, Kalovy and Žižkův vrch, as well as through the Otava valley near Na Pátečku. Most trails begin at the town hall on the square in Sušice and are marked with colored spiderweb symbols.

Museums and regional insights

The Muzeum Šumavy Sušice brings together various themes relating to the town and the region. On the ground floor, step-free access is available to the exhibitions on match production and archaeology, as well as to the “V hradbách” exhibition rooms. Another special feature is the Sušický mechanický betlém. The Sušický mechanický betlém depicts historic Šumava architecture as well as important sights in Sušice and its surroundings.

Relaxation and activities along the Otava

Lesopark Luh is a popular recreational area for the residents of Sušice and visitors to the town. It can be reached on foot from the square in Sušice in just a few minutes. The OFFPARK Sušice rope park is also located on the banks of the Otava. There, 34 obstacles await you at a height of 6 meters, followed by 3 zip lines. In addition to culture and hiking routes, this offers a range of clearly defined activities in the area around the town.
