Krsy brings together architectural history, traces of a vanished settlement and a distinctive landscape feature. At the Church of St. Lawrence and the former rectory opposite, different periods of construction stand side by side; Umíř and Polínský vrch lead to further historical and landscape-related topics. This makes the area interesting if you would like to include culture and landscape in your travel plans.

Church and rectory: architectural history from different periods

The Church of St. Lawrence dates back to an early 14th-century Gothic building; it was later remodelled in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Late Gothic statues of St. Anne and St. Blaise, dating from around 1500, have been preserved inside. The same building therefore brings together a medieval origin, later alterations and a specific work of late Gothic art. Opposite stands the former rectory, a protected late Baroque building from the second half of the 18th century. The two buildings can be placed in the context of their different periods without being grouped into a single phase of construction.

Umíř: surviving traces of a vanished settlement

Umíř is a deserted settlement in the municipality of Krsy, located in Manětínská hornatina Nature Park. The chapel is the settlement’s last surviving building; five wells and several cellars have also been preserved. Different kinds of remains can therefore be found side by side: a surviving building and other traces of the former settlement. This makes Umíř a different cultural and historical topic from the church in Krsy: there, several periods of alteration shape an existing church building, while here, the remaining relics recall a vanished place. The nature park is also an important geographical reference for putting the site in context.

Polínský vrch: landscape, former uses and activities

Polínský vrch lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Krsy and is a prominent landscape feature. There is evidence of prehistoric settlement and a former basalt quarry in the area of the hill. The landscape, former settlement and quarrying offer different perspectives on the same place, without extending the cautiously worded evidence into a complete history. Polínský vrch is also used for climbing and camping. If you are planning either activity, check the local rules beforehand.

Views and astronomical heritage

On the south side of the Krsy Environmental Centre, there is a viewpoint overlooking the village square, the Church of St. Lawrence and the scenic landscape horizon. Another local feature is the Krsy Noon Clocks, an item of astronomical heritage consisting of two parallel stone blocks. The year 1874 is carved into one of the blocks, while the other bears the inscription “MERIDIUM”. Together, the two stones are a striking example of astronomical heritage in Krsy.

Krsy as a place to look for accommodation

If you are looking for a hotel in Krsy, first consider which travel interest appeals to you most: the architectural history of the church and the rectory opposite, the settlement traces in Umíř, or the landscape and activities at Polínský vrch. These topics give you different points of reference when choosing your destination. The combination of cultural and landscape-related attractions makes Krsy especially interesting if you do not want to limit yourself to just one kind of discovery.
