Kladruby U Stříbra brings together the history of a Baroque Benedictine monastery, themed trails and regional museums. The monastery was founded in 1115 by the Bohemian prince Vladislav I. Visitors looking to focus their stay on culture, physical activity or both will find a range of options: guided tours explore monastic life and the history of the ruling dynasty, while the circular trail and long-distance routes offer other ways to experience the surrounding area.

Monastery Tours and History

The main tour at Klášter Kladruby introduces visitors to the monks’ lives. It covers their accommodation and meals, as well as their spiritual life, work and recreation. The tour leads through renovated areas of the new and old convents and the Paradise Courtyard. This puts the everyday lives of the monastery’s residents in the spotlight, as well as the Baroque Benedictine monastery itself.

Another tour focuses on the Windischgrätz family, Alfred I and his wife Eleonore, and the economic use of the former monastic estate. The tour includes the original interior of the princely library from the first half of the 20th century. On April 1, 2023, the “Klášter” and “Zámek” tour routes at Klášter Kladruby opened to visitors. Tour availability may change; check the current offer before planning a specific visit.

Museums and the History of Fortifications

Nearby, the Regionální muzeum Kladrubska presents an exhibition on Kladruby’s 900-year history, from the monastery’s foundation in 1115 to 1945. Another exhibition covers the fortification system in the Kladruby area. It features exhibits on the construction of light fortifications, as well as information about fortifications in the surrounding area and tips for trips. The exhibits on display may change.

The Muzeum Československého opevnění Kladruby comprises two light fortification structures of the vz. 37 type. They were built in 1938 as the first line of defense against Nazi Germany. The museum is right next to the monastery. Together with the exhibition at the Regionální muzeum Kladrubska, it offers two perspectives on the history of fortifications: through the structures themselves and through information about the fortification system in the Kladruby area.

Circular Trail, Long-Distance Routes and Summer Music

The natural history and historical trail Naučná stezka Kladruby begins at the monastery. Its topics include the geology of the Úhlavka, the mills on the Úhlavka and fishing. The trail therefore offers a different focus from the monastery tours: it explores natural history and topics related to the surrounding area, while the tours focus on monastic life and history.

Long-distance cycling routes No. 37 and 306 and the international E6 hiking route pass by the monastery. The Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela also passes by the monastery. When planning, you can choose between a themed circular trail, a long-distance hiking route and a cycling route without treating them as one continuous trail. Trail conditions and signage may change.

Kladrubské hudební léto takes place every summer in Kladruby Cathedral. The specific program dates vary, so plan a concert visit around that summer’s program.

Distances and Accommodation

The “Kladruby, okres Tachov” and “Kladruby - U školy” bus stops are each about 900 meters from the monastery grounds. Stříbro train station is about 7 km from the monastery on foot via the blue hiking trail. The distances therefore refer to different stops and routes. Check the appropriate connection and current trail conditions for your trip.
