Horní Staňkov combines cultural history with marked trails through the landscape. The castle, the Chapel of Saint Hildegard and several routes give the place different facets: you can explore the history of the area, choose a signposted hiking route or consider Cycling Route 2031 as a specific route. The castle and chapel date from different centuries: the castle was built in the mid-18th century, while the chapel was constructed at the end of the 19th century. More than a hundred years separate the two buildings; at the castle, the focus is on its architecture and design, while at the chapel, the circumstances of its construction and its reconstruction take center stage. When looking for accommodation, this combination provides clear guidance based on your preferred travel experience, without merging the individual destinations into a single attraction.

The History of the Castle and the Chapel of Saint Hildegard

Horní Staňkov Castle was built in the mid-18th century. Its appearance is simple and clearly structured: it is a one-story rectangular building with a hipped roof, a polygonal turret and adjoining farm buildings. The hipped roof and turret complement the rectangular ground plan; the farm buildings are also part of the complex. The focus is therefore not only on the age of the building, but also on its distinctive architecture.

The Chapel of Saint Hildegard has its own historical story. It was built at the end of the 19th century following the premature death of the 18-year-old daughter of JUDr. Gustav Schreiner and was dedicated to Saint Hildegard. Lesy České republiky reconstructed the chapel using historical photographs. An information board and outdoor seating were installed next to the chapel. This makes it possible to combine the visit with a moment of reflection, while the information board offers an additional way to learn about the history of the place.

Hiking and Cycling with Different Route Profiles

A red-marked hiking trail runs through Horní Staňkov. It leads uphill to the Chapel of Saint Hildegard and runs through Horní Staňkov and Svatobor to Sušice.

For exploring by bicycle, Cycling Route 2031 is a separate option. It connects Velhartice, Horní Staňkov, Cihelna, Svojšice, Odolenov and Sušice over 12 km. In the wider area around Horní Staňkov, the Velhartice educational trail also runs along a stream on the boundary of the Borek Nature Reserve. The cycling route connects six places over 12 km; the educational trail, by contrast, follows a course along the stream and the boundary of the Borek Nature Reserve. Hiking, cycling and an educational trail therefore stand alongside one another as clearly distinct ways of exploring the area and landscape.

When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first consider which focus suits your stay: the castle and chapel offer a cultural and historical perspective, while the red-marked hiking trail, Cycling Route 2031 and the Velhartice educational trail highlight different ways of exploring the surrounding area.

For further orientation, you can also explore Svata Katerina, Olšany, Čímice, Domoraz, Hrádek, Pačejov, Předslav and Chudenín.
