Hartmanice amid nature, history and winter sports

Hartmanice brings together several travel experiences that can be easily combined: nature experiences on Hamižná mountain, distinctive cultural sites with regular events, and a ski resort offering slopes of varying difficulty. The town lies on the border of Šumava National Park at an elevation of 712 m. The altitude is therefore just as much a part of the town’s character as its historic connection to trade routes and its proximity to protected landscapes.

Hamižná nature trail and nature reserve

The Hamižná nature trail is 3 km long and passes thirteen information stations. It is suitable for hikers, cyclists and families with small children. The Ochranářský koutek serves as both the starting and finishing point. There you will find a shelter, a fire pit, a drinking-water spring and a resting area. For a stay in Hartmanice, the trail thus offers a clearly defined way to experience the landscape on a trip of its own, without the route consisting solely of a viewpoint or a single destination.

Hamižná mountain has been a nature reserve since 1995. Remains of gold mining have also been preserved there, including pits and millstones. These traces give the natural area an additional historical dimension: along the nature trail, information about the landscape meets visible evidence of its former use. Anyone who would also like to discover local history while hiking will find a different focus here than on a purely nature-oriented excursion.

Church and synagogue as distinctive cultural sites

Hartmanice is home to the Church of St Catherine, whose origins date back to the Gothic period of the 14th century. A year-round exhibition in the vestibule commemorates twelve women who died during a death march at the end of the Second World War. The site thus combines a historic building with an exhibition that brings a specific chapter of European history to life.

The Horská Synagogue Hartmanice is the highest-altitude synagogue in the Czech Republic and is one of the few surviving synagogues in the Bohemian Forest. It is interesting not only for its architectural and regional significance: concerts, lectures and theatre performances are regularly held there. Depending on your interests, you can therefore discover Hartmanice with a focus on history and architecture or by attending a cultural event.

Historic routes and the character of the destination

Hartmanice was a customs settlement on the medieval Březnická stezka. The Vintířova stezka runs through Prášily, Dobrá Voda, Hartmanice and Sušice. It is 150 km long in total and forms part of a historic trade route between Niederaltaich and Blatná.

Skiing for different experience levels

The Hartmanice ski resort has four slopes of varying difficulty and is suitable for family skiing. The resort also includes a nearly 600 m long slope and a lift. The terrain ranges from gentle sections for beginners and children to steeper sections for experienced skiers.
