Městiště is a destination for travelers who want to combine nature, cycling and a specific connection to the history of the place. The beautiful surrounding countryside attracts cyclists in particular. At the same time, the history of the area extends from farmsteads and a trade route to Denkcherzův hamr, which remained in operation until 1975. If you want to bring together different interests within your family, you can therefore plan your time in Městiště around specific themes: natural surroundings and physical activity can be set alongside cultural and historical exploration without treating the two separately.

Městišťské rokle Nature Reserve

An important natural attraction is the Městišťské rokle Nature Reserve. It was first designated as a nature reserve on December 9, 1994. The protected areas include the headwaters, peat bogs and streamside floodplain meadows of the Jelenka stream and its tributaries. These different landscape elements are particularly interesting when planning a trip because they provide a tangible impression of the natural environment: waterways, wet habitats and wooded areas are part of it, as are the treeless sections of the area.

The nature reserve serves to preserve and restore natural forests. Herbaceous plant communities in the treeless sections are also protected there. If you are traveling with children, you can use these differences as engaging topics for shared discoveries without limiting your stay to a single activity. Městišťské rokle thus represents a trip in which the landscape itself becomes the subject of observation.

Cycling and an easy connection

Městiště is visited mainly by cyclists because of the beautiful surrounding countryside. Cycling is therefore a natural focus for anyone who wants to make their stay active while also getting to know the character of the place.

There is also an easy connection from Městiště to Onen Svět. If different ideas about how to spend a day arise within your family, this makes it possible to combine an interest in nature and the area with an additional destination.

From the Iron Hammer to the Trade Route

Denkcherzův hamr is a distinctive cultural and historical point of interest. It remained in operation until 1975. Axes, hoes, plowshares and other tools were made there from imported iron. Its production for agriculture and crafts points to the former importance of the place without equating the hamr with a present-day museum or visitor attraction.

The older history of Městiště also opens up another perspective. Around 1554, Městiště was already marked on a map of the Výšinná trade route from Zwiesel to Klatovy. At that time, Městiště had farmsteads with associated arable land. Several historical layers therefore appear side by side: the place on a trade route, agricultural use and the processing of imported iron at Denkcherzův hamr.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

When looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Městiště, your desired travel focus should be the starting point. If nature and cycling are your priorities, you can tailor your search to these interests. If you are more interested in local history, Denkcherzův hamr, the trade route and the farmsteads are suitable topics to include in your planning.
