Chudenice combines a nature-focused walk with important historical sites and unusual literary traces. This creates a destination where you can combine a day in the forest, an interest in trees and landscape conservation, and the history of the noble Czernin family from Chudenice. This combination is particularly appealing for a family holiday because it brings together different interests during one stay, without every activity having to be of the same nature.

Educational Trail and Arboretum: Nature with Specific Themes

The Žďár Educational Trail is 5 km long and leads through the forest. The paths are well maintained, and the terrain is mostly easy. At 15 stations, visitors can learn interesting facts about the local animal and plant life as well as other local features. The two starting points are also important for planning: the trail begins either at Zámek Lázeň or at the Chapel of St. Anne. This allows you to start the walk from either of two clearly designated locations.

The Americká zahrada Arboretum has a different focus. It is dedicated to collections of woody plants, trees and shrubs. Its history dates back to autumn 1828, when it was established as a nursery and plant reserve for the Lázeň spa. In 1969, the Ministry of Culture of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic designated Americká zahrada as a state-protected park and as a rare scientific, natural and cultural monument.

Starý zámek and Traces of the Czernins

Starý zámek is the oldest monument in Chudenice and is considered the cradle of the old noble Czernin family from Chudenice. The exhibition presents authentic historical furniture, objects and pictures of the Czernins from Chudenice. These items originally came from Zámek Lázeň, thereby establishing a connection between the historical sites.

When visiting Starý zámek, you can see the oldest parts of the original fortress. These include the preserved defensive bastion with an exhibition, the lord of the castle’s living quarters, the kitchen and the food store with remnants of an original spiral staircase. The original gate with remains of the mechanism for the drawbridge and Gothic arrow slits have also been preserved. Those interested in architectural history will therefore find not only representative rooms here, but also tangible traces of the former fortifications.

The Kvapilova jezírka provide a cultural addition. They are associated with the writer Jaroslav Kvapil, who enjoyed spending time there during his studies. When writing the libretto for Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, he had this place in mind as the setting. Alongside the history of the nobility and the fortress, the sights therefore also include a literary memory.

Important Information for Your Stay

Zámek Lázeň and its park are accessible only during cultural or social events or by prior arrangement with the castle administration. You should take this rule into account if the castle grounds are among your desired experiences. Although the Žďár Educational Trail names Zámek Lázeň as one of its two starting points, access to the castle and park is subject to the regulation described above.

In the broader landscape context, Chudenicko has been a landscape heritage zone since 1996. This area includes viewpoints, small bodies of water, Lázeň Park, the Americká zahrada Arboretum and the Bolfánek Lookout Tower. When searching for a hotel in Chudenice, this classification can help you define your preferred focus in advance: you can orient your stay more toward the forest and natural history, historic indoor and outdoor spaces, or a combination of both themes. The reviewed sites thereby give the destination a clearly distinctive profile.
