Svébohov between the Foothills and Local History
Svébohov is a small foothill municipality at the foot of Zborovský háječek. The village combines a rich local history with trails and viewpoints in the surrounding area.
Trails to Nadhledna Háječek
Nadhledna Háječek is located in the vicinity of Svébohov, between Svébohov and Zborov. It offers unobstructed panoramic views. The viewpoint can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a yellow-marked KČT trail approximately 2 km long. The roughly two-kilometre distance puts the outing into geographical perspective and helps you decide whether to plan the viewpoint as a separate trail or as part of a day of cycling. Cycle Route 6230 also passes through Svébohov between Pivonín and Rovensko. The nature trail in the village is called “Nebe, peklo, země, ráj” and adds further opportunities to explore the surrounding area along different routes.
Historic Buildings and Sacred Sites
Among the notable cultural sites is the Evangelical prayer house in Svébohov, built in 1860 and listed as a protected monument. The village is also home to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a historicist church built in 1869. It remains an active place of worship while also being of historical interest. Another protected heritage site is the cleared timber farmstead No. 41, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The construction dates place the buildings in a clear chronological sequence: the farmstead dates from the first half of the 19th century, the prayer house was built in 1860, and the church in 1869. For visitors, the difference in function is just as important as the age of the buildings. The prayer house and the church represent sacred architecture; in the case of the church, this is complemented by its continuing use for worship. The farmstead adds a rural architectural form to this perspective. During a walk, this makes it possible to follow historical development through different types of buildings without equating the religious and secular examples.
Memories of Work and Modern History
The former inhabitants of Svébohov supplemented farming with work done at home: first spinning, and later the production of thread buttons, wooden shoes and other wooden goods. Thus, in addition to agriculture, their former working life also included textile and wooden products. A memorial plaque on the front wall of the municipal office commemorates Arnošt Valenta. It honours him as a member of the 311th Czechoslovak Bomber Squadron in Great Britain and as a participant in the “Great Escape” from the Stalag Luft 3 prisoner-of-war camp. Alongside the local and architectural history, this personal wartime story is therefore also part of Svébohov’s historical heritage.
