Sobotín is a destination where hiking, nature observation and local history stand closely side by side. The Sobotín Loop Trail is a 17 km tourist route with 14 information-board stations; some stations have benches. The topics range from local history and life today to the flora and fauna of the area. This makes it possible to explore Sobotín actively without separating the landscape from its history.

The Sobotín Loop Trail and Orientation

For orientation, maps are available at four points along the route: in front of Motorest Permoník, in front of Motorest Ztracenka, in Rudoltice at house number 133 and at the Klein family mausoleum. They are also issued by the Sobotín municipal office. Traťovka is a crossing point for hiking, cycling and winter cross-country skiing routes. This provides different types of routes for planning your day.

Nature Between Forest and Panorama

One station on the loop trail is located about 100 m from the Smrčina Nature Monument. The lesser horseshoe bat overwinters in a local adit within the nature monument. In the forest section of the Sobotín Loop Trail, you can find the white helleborine and the protected Turk’s cap lily. The hills above Sobotín offer views of the Hrubý Jeseník panorama. Those who want to experience nature not only as a view but also as a habitat will find several different points of connection here.

Church, Chateau and the History of Iron

The Church of St. Lawrence is part of the local history: it was built in 1605 on the site of an earlier Protestant prayer house. An incident in the church was connected with the witch trials, which claimed hundreds more victims. Sobotín Chateau is also historically multifaceted. It was built on the site of an old iron hammer mill and acquired a Romantic historicist design during reconstruction in the 1840s. At that time, it was surrounded by a chateau park, an ornamental pond and several small park structures.

The iron industry in Sobotín dates back to the beginning of the 17th century; it included shaft furnaces, iron hammer mills and foundries. During Sobotín’s heyday in 1852–1853, Sobotín became a centre of the Austrian iron industry. The operation, with a branch in Štěpánov near Olomouc, employed 2,000 workers. This history gives the town’s cultural attractions a clearly recognisable theme.

Further Routes and Discoveries

Access points to the Mineralogical Educational Trail include Sobotín railway station, the Vernířovice municipal office with the car park by the church, and Resort Sobotín with the car park near Motorest Permoník. In addition, Sobotín has a rescue station for native crayfish. There, crayfish conservation can be presented to the public through training sessions, excursions and professional activities. When choosing accommodation in Sobotín, you can consider your planned focuses separately: the loop trail, nature monument and educational trail on the one hand, and the church, chateau and history of the iron industry on the other.
