Proßnitz – Culture, Nature and Special Experiences

Proßnitz combines a distinctive history with unusual cultural offerings and green places to explore. Its highlights include Prostějov Castle, the town hall and the Art Nouveau National House; at the same time, exhibitions, an observatory and the health trail in the Hloučela biocorridor lead into very different worlds of interest. This creates a destination where historic architecture, regional traditions, nature observation and a unique perspective on the city can be experienced together.

Castle, City History and Architecture

Prostějov Castle is an important historic monument and a valuable example of Moravian Renaissance architecture. Jan z Pernštejna had it built between 1522 and 1526 as part of the city fortifications. The regular tour includes the office of the savings bank director, the “Prostějovské stopy Jano Köhlera” exhibition, Renaissance rooms and a ballroom. The Museum and Gallery in Prostějov presents the permanent exhibition “Za tajemstvím střepu – pravěké dějiny Prostějovska” on the prehistoric history of the Prostějov region.

The National House in Prostějov, designed by Jan Kotěra, serves as a cultural centre with a theatre hall. Guided tours of the Art Nouveau National House cover its history and architecture. Group tours can be arranged by prior agreement and last 60 minutes. Prostějov Town Hall is another distinctive building: it is a national cultural monument. Its tower can be climbed as part of regular guided tours and offers a fine view of the city centre.

Exhibitions, Observatory and Regional Traditions

Exhibitions and workshops take place at Prostějov Castle throughout the year. In the evenings, Prostějov Observatory offers observations of the Moon, planets, stars, galaxies and artificial space stations. During the day, solar observations are possible using portable astronomical telescopes. The observatory also hosts specialist lectures, exhibitions, and film, music and literary evenings.

A fixed event in the annual calendar is the traditional “Prostějovské hanácké slavnosti”, held on the second weekend of September. The programme includes folklore performances as well as stalls selling gingerbread hearts, handicraft products and other culinary offerings. Another quiet feature can be found on the grounds of the old Jewish cemetery: part of the site is now a park with a preserved avenue of lime trees running through its centre.

Botanical Garden and Health Trail

The botanical garden on Lidická Street in the heart of Prostějov showcases the diversity of plant life and various ecosystems of the temperate zone. The completed health trail in the Hloučela biocorridor adds eight stations to the existing educational trail. Its features include a water trail, an observation station, a maze, a dendrophone and a peep hole with bird models. The city’s range of attractions thus extends from Renaissance and Art Nouveau architecture to plants, water and observation.
