Palonín between Local History and Landscape

Palonín combines local history, protected cultural heritage and a regional cycling route. If you are looking for a place for your trip where historical traces, landscapes and different excursion interests can be combined, the municipality offers several specific points of interest. St. Joseph’s Church, Farmhouse No. 36, Bílá Lhota Arboretum and Cycling Route No. 6204 each provide a distinct focus.

Palonín lies at an elevation of 272 metres at the southern tip of the so-called Mohelnická brázda in the Šumperk District. The municipality covers 537 hectares of predominantly fertile land. Its territory also extends into the catchment area of the Morava.

Cultural Monuments with a Long History

St. Joseph’s Church and the Calvary ensemble are protected as cultural monuments. The church was built in 1828–1829 in the Classicist style. The Calvary ensemble dates from 1825 and was also designed in the Classicist style. Thus, two distinct historical dates and a shared Classicist design approach come together in one place.

The first written mention of Palonín dates from 1353. Archaeological excavations near Palonín suggest that a Slavic settlement had existed there since the 9th century. Its cultural history also includes a connection with the painter and illustrator Stanislav Lolek, who illustrated the book Liška Bystrouška.

Another historical feature is the listed Farmhouse No. 36. It comprises two buildings around a wall with a passage gate. The farmstead includes a residential building, a dower house, and a courtyard with arcades, a barn and stables. The complex complements the religious architecture with an example of a traditional farmstead layout.

Nature, Cycling and Further Discoveries

Bílá Lhota Arboretum covers a three-hectare park area. There, you can visit an alpine garden and an aviary with exotic birds, see the chateau, stroll by the pond and play a game of giant chess. The combination of parkland, architecture and a playful element offers a distinctly different accent from the historical landmarks in Palonín.

For cyclists, Cycling Route No. 6204 provides a clear point of reference: it leads from Loštice through Palonín onwards towards Červená Lhota and Bílá Lhota. The route connects several places and helps structure a cycling tour with multiple stages. This keeps the planning open to different daily destinations rather than focusing on a single sight.

When looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Palonín, you can therefore first decide whether local history, cultural monuments, cycling or nature-related discoveries should be the focus of your trip. This keeps your choice of where to stay aligned with your planned interests while leaving room for different ideas for each day.

Further places for your research include Brníčko, Velké Losiny, Lukavice, Zlaty Potok, Loucná Nad Desnou, Kamenná, Chromeč and Sobotin.
