Ondratice: Kopaniny Protected Area and Local History
Accommodation in Ondratice
Ondratice lies at the first foothills of the Drahany Highlands. If you would like to combine nature observation and cultural details on your trip, Ondratice offers specific points of interest for both.
Kopaniny Natural Area
The Kopaniny Protected Area consists of a mosaic of former pastures, meadows, small fields, and orchards separated from one another by terraced grassy strips. The area includes species-rich grassland communities, waterlogged areas with a spring, and an extensively managed orchard meadow with tall standard trees. This combination of different areas shapes the character of the protected area and creates various opportunities for nature observation. In the northeastern part, there is a very vigorous population of fringed gentian. In the Kopaniny wetland, smooth newts, European tree frogs, and common frogs reproduce.
The entrance to the Kopaniny Protected Area begins at the end of Ondratice’s upper sports field, thereby marking a specific starting point for orientation on site. The Ondratický Stream also complements the landscape: it rises from a spring beside a mighty beech tree in Křenice and flows into the Broděnka Stream in Brodek. Its course thus connects the spring, stream, and confluence across several localities. Together, the protected area and the stream represent two different natural themes: diverse wetland and grassland habitats, and the course of a specific waterway.
Local History and Cultural Monuments
A one-class school was built in Ondratice in 1870. The present school building was constructed in 1909–1910; classes are no longer held there. Sokol was founded in Ondratice in 1919. The chronology thus extends from the first school through the present building, which is no longer used for teaching, to the founding of Sokol. Those interested in local history will encounter educational and association history here across different eras.
The local history also includes several religious and commemorative details. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk with its bell tower is registered as an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It was restored and fitted with a tower in 1898. The stone cross on the road to Drysice was reconstructed and its surroundings were improved; the stone cross at the children’s playground in Ondratice was also reconstructed. The statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in Ondratice was restored in 2010.
Announced Game Feast and Pork Feast
For Saturday, June 20, 2026, a game feast was planned at the hunting lodge, to be organized by local hunters. In addition, a traditional pork feast was announced in Ondratice as a culinary event based on a home slaughter. In one case, the hunting lodge and local hunters define the occasion; in the other, the traditional home slaughter does.
