Niva amid wetlands and local history

Niva is located in the northern part of the Drahanské vrchoviny, west of Prostějov. The village combines protected wetlands, hiking and cycling trails, and a rich history. This gives Niva several starting points for planning your trip: you can combine nature observation, active days, and an exploration of the village’s history.

Protected landscapes in the village

The area around Horní rybník is protected as the Nivské louky natural monument. Nivské louky comprises meadow communities and wetland areas that support endangered and rare plant and animal species. The particular value of this landscape therefore lies not in a single viewpoint, but in the combination of meadows, wetlands, and plant and animal life.

The Návesní niva natural monument is located in the southern center of Niva. It consists of waterlogged floodplain meadows and is home to a rich variety of plant and animal life, including amphibians. The two protected areas are located in different parts of the village: Nivské louky at Horní rybník and Návesní niva in the southern center.

Water also shapes the village. The Bílá Voda stream flows through Niva and feeds all three ponds in the village. Together with the wet meadows, this creates a landscape in which waterways, meadows, and protected habitats are closely interconnected.

Hiking and cycling around Niva

Several hiking trails and a cycling route pass through Niva. This makes the village interesting for your further planning if you would like to combine accommodation with time spent outdoors. The available facts describe the trails as part of the village; no specific distances, difficulty levels, or walking times are associated with them and these should be checked separately before your trip.

For longer cycling tours, cycling route 5075 is relevant. It is signposted as the Krakov–Morava–Vienna Greenway, passes through Niva, and connects Sloup, Repechy, Plumlov, and Prostějov along its route.

Hartmanice: Niva’s historical side

Niva was formerly called Hartmanice. The first written mention of Hartmanice dates back to 1347. This historical name is part of the village’s history and, alongside the natural monuments, offers a second way of approaching Niva.

During the Second World War, Hartmanice was evacuated on November 30, 1942, its population was forcibly resettled, and the village was used by German troops as a practice shooting range. After the war, former residents returned. For your travel decision, this means that Niva is not only a starting point for trails through a protected landscape, but also a place whose present-day name is connected with a documented historical development.

Other places to consider

If you would like to compare Niva with other destinations in the same travel area, you can also consider Skalka U Prostějova, Budětsko, Němčice Nad Hanou, Výšovice, Čechy Pod Kosířem, Čelčice, Stínava, and Olšany U Prostějova.
