Klimkovice: Culture, Spa Park and Sanatoria

Klimkovice combines vivid history with parks, developed nature trails and the distinctive character of a spa town. Castle, Churches and Regional History

Zámek Klimkovice is a Renaissance castle from the second half of the 16th century. After fires in 1854 and 1945, it was rebuilt. Today, it houses the Muzeum Poodří and the town's information centre. The second floor contains exhibitions on the history and present of Klimkovice, the natural conditions of the Poodří region and a memorial to the painter Helena Salichová.

Another prominent site is Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice, the oldest surviving historical building in Klimkovice. After extensive renovation, the church serves as a venue for exhibitions, concerts and other social events. The tower of Kostel sv. Kateřiny Alexandrijské has an unusual architectural feature: it is 64 centimetres off its axis and has ended with a low roof since the fire of 1854, because the original Renaissance tower spire was not rebuilt. A Baroque chapel with a 25-metre-high dome was built beside the church between 1730 and 1738.

Nature Trails, Forest and Spa Park

The freely accessible public Petra Bezruče Park is suitable for a walk with several points of interest. The Naučná stezka veverky Augustinky runs through it, with eleven information panels and a children's nature trail. A cycle route from Klimkovice towards Polanka and Jistebník also runs along the promenade in Stromovka Avenue.

Lesní park Klimkovice is a forest recreational area with ecological play elements, information panels and benches. A nature trail and a movement area for rehabilitation in the forest are also intended for visitors with mobility limitations. The spa park of Sanatoria Klimkovice is used by patients, spa guests and the public. Paths for pedestrians and wheelchair users, recreational areas and facilities for shared activities make it an experience area in its own right.

The restored Opavská cesta offers views of the surrounding landscape in all seasons. Its section in Klimkovice runs through Hýlov along the edge of Rakovec Forest and includes a lime-tree avenue that was probably planted in the second half of the 18th century.

Sanatoria and Active Days

The treatment complex of Sanatoria Klimkovice lies amid the forests of the Nízký Jeseník and offers views of the Beskid Mountains panorama. The modern sanatoria were ceremonially opened in July 1994 and are now a non-governmental healthcare facility specialising in rehabilitation and spa treatments. The Vodoléčebné centrum includes an iodine-bromine brine pool, Finnish and steam saunas with a cooling pool, a whirlpool, a Kneipp course, massage showers and a relaxation room.

Cyclists will also find several connections in Klimkovice. The signposted cycle route 6011 leads from Polanka nad Odrou towards Olbramice through the town. Route 6140 comes from Čavisov at the Mezihoří crossroads to Klimkovice and runs past the technical area of the sanatoria in Hýlov. Route 6199 leads from Vřesina via Mexiko and Vřesinská Street through Klimkovice and connects to Route 6011 at the crossroads with Havlíčkova Street.

Markets and Memorial Sites

At Slezský rynek in front of Zámek Klimkovice, meat specialities, fresh food, sweet and savoury dishes, drinks, refreshments and handicraft products are offered. Klimkovický jarmark is a recurring town event with traditional stalls, food, music and a programme for visitors of all ages.

The two Lípy osvobozených Klimkovic near Na Láni are among the quieter memorial sites; they were planted in May 1946 in memory of the years 1918 and 1945. Lípa Bezručova near Na Láni was planted in 1958 on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the Silesian poet Petr Bezruč. Na Láni is officially designated as a group of memorial trees. The monument to the victims of the First World War was created in 1925; the grounds around the monument were last altered in 2018 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia. It commemorates 63 citizens of Klimkovice who died on the battlefields of the First World War far from their homeland.
