Kozlovice: History by the Water and a Vibrant Local Culture

Kozlovice brings together historical landmarks, a mill landscape and regional culture within a compact area. Particularly impressive is the Areál Na Mlýně on the right bank of the Ondřejnice near the lower end of Kozlovice. There, the stream cuts into the Palkovické Hůrky and forms a natural gorge several kilometres long. The site thus combines a tangible landscape experience with several independent destinations for a culturally oriented stay.

Mills and Museums with Their Own Stories

The Areál Fojtství was the seat of the Wallachian voivodes of the Hukvaldy estate in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were responsible for managing the sheep pastures in the remote mountains. Today, the reconstructed complex offers several independent permanent exhibitions and the opportunity to take a guided tour. For visitors who would like to explore the history of Kozlovice and its surroundings in greater depth, this is a clear focal point of the town.

The Areál Na Mlýně includes a reconstructed mill with a 250-metre-long millrace and a fully functioning water wheel. Šmiřákův mlýn was one of the four oldest mills in Kozlovice and was already listed in the first surviving estate register from 1581.

The Museum Obecná škola focuses on a traditional kitchen with a brick stove, bread oven, household vessels and historic baking utensils. There is also an authentically furnished classroom. Visitors can sit on historic wooden benches and write on slate boards with a slate pencil. The museum presents history not only through objects, but also through a specific everyday situation.

Churches, Architectural History and the Stations of the Cross

The Church of St Michael and St Barbara in Kozlovice is an elongated single-nave building with a polygonally ended presbytery and a prismatic tower. It was built between 1731 and 1742 beside an older church made largely of wood, which had probably been built around 1300. St Barbara is also a national cultural monument.

Opposite the Areál Na Mlýně, on the slope of Skalka Hill, there is a Stations of the Cross with 14 stations. The stations are painted according to original designs of folk oil paintings from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the church and the mills, the Stations of the Cross broaden the cultural view of Kozlovice with a religious and artistic landmark.

Hiking and Regional Specialities

Janáčkův chodníček is one of the educational trails presented as hiking routes starting from Kozlovice. The trail thus complements the historical sights with an opportunity to experience the town through its landscape and the surroundings of the Palkovické Hůrky. The Valašský pivovar in Kozlovice adds a culinary highlight: there, you can taste and discover craft-brewed beer in the heart of Kozlovice.
