Brušperk between Church, Heritage Conservation and Discovery

Brušperk reveals its distinctive character above all through the combination of sacred architectural history, local memory and paths through the town. At the centre is the parish church of St. George, which is designated as a second-level cultural monument. For a stay with a cultural focus, the town therefore offers several clearly distinct themes: the church’s architecture, the Way of the Cross with its chapels, the history of significant personalities and a route with outdoor stations.

St. George’s Church and the Way of the Cross with 14 Chapels

St. George’s Church features Romanesque, Baroque and Neoclassical elements. The building was remodelled in 1871 and served as Moravia’s first National House for cultural purposes. A Way of the Cross with 14 chapels dating from the late 18th century also runs around St. George’s Church. Those interested in sacred art and historic townscapes will find two clearly connected yet independent aspects here: the church building itself and the complex surrounding it.

Commemorating Vojtěch Martínek

Another cultural aspect is the Vojtěch Martínek Monument. It houses a permanent exhibition on the life and work of the writer Vojtěch Martínek. It also presents significant personalities from Brušperk, including Jožka Matěj, František Palkovský, Bohumil Fiala and Vilém Vitekro. A visit can therefore focus not only on a single biography: the exhibition presents Martínek’s life and work alongside other names associated with Brušperk. For travellers who enjoy discovering local history through the people connected with it, this creates a distinct focus away from the church’s architecture.

Windmill and Heritage Conservation Zone

The windmill is a striking feature of the landscape when viewed from the north in the direction of Ostrava. Around the centre of Brušperk, the Brušperk Urban Heritage Conservation Zone was designated by Decree No. 476/1992 Coll. of the Ministry of Culture, dated 10 September 1992. This means that the town offers both an individual, widely visible structure and a formally designated protected area for further cultural exploration.

Educational Trail and Route to the Market Square

For an exploration with a stronger focus on walking and learning, the Školní naučná stezka educational trail runs through Brušperk. The trail comprises 24 stations. Wooden posts with QR codes lead to online materials created by female and male students and teachers. The information is thus directly linked to the individual stations along the route and complements the town tour with digital access. Another orientation option is Route No. 6006: it leads via Fryčovice to Brušperk, crosses the Ondřejnice and continues to the market square.

Other Places for Regional Orientation
