Vichova Nad Jizerou: Landscape, History and the Víchovská Trail

Víchová nad Jizerou stretches uphill from the Jizera Valley along the slopes and offers views of the panorama of the western Krkonoše. There are 200 metres of elevation between the lower and upper parts. This difference in elevation shapes the town: The view changes between the valley and the upper areas, while the western Krkonoše form the landscape setting. The landscape, protected nature, local history and a marked trail therefore provide several different points of interest for planning your trip.

Landscape and Protected Nature

Parts of Víchová nad Jizerou lie in Zone III and parts in the protected zone of KRNAP. The area contains important sites with protected plant species, including military orchid, broad-leaved marsh orchid, Turk’s cap lily and lesser butterfly-orchid. Danehlova lípa and Lípa na Koutě are the two protected notable trees in the town.

The folk architecture of Víchová nad Jizerou includes the listed farmstead No. 85. There are also three separate bell towers, one in each of the three parts of the town. Those who pay attention to small-scale local features will discover individual cultural and historical points of interest here alongside the landscape panorama.

Hrádek and Traces of the Past

In V Bučí, the medieval fortification of Hrádek lies above the municipal library of Víchová nad Jizerou, in the direction of Danehlova lípa. Ceramics date the site to the period from the 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Today, Hrádek is badly damaged: The inner platform has been partly removed, although the remains of an artificially constructed moat are still visible. The combination of its dating and visible remains defines the character of the site: Hrádek does not represent a completely preserved structure, but rather a damaged trace of an earlier fortification.

The Víchovská Trail with a Local Artistic Connection

The Víchovská Trail is marked in red, yellow and blue, is 11 km long, runs along wide paths and is also suitable for cyclists. The route can be divided into two sections, and public transport can be used for this purpose. Dividing it up makes it possible to spread the available time across two stages and consider the route in a way that suits your daily plans. You can therefore plan the trail as one continuous route or in two sections.

Along the trail lies “Zarostlá místa Kavánových obrazů”, a permanent landscape gallery with twelve reproductions of Kaván’s works in wooden frames. The academic landscape painter František Kaván was born in Víchovská Lhota, a part of Víchová nad Jizerou. Thus, landscape and a clear local artistic connection come together along the same route.

A Water Spot for Hot Days

In hot weather, the Jizera at its confluence with the Jizerka in Horní Sytová is recommended as a place to cool off. This specific water spot complements the landscape between the valley and the slopes and provides another thematic focus for your trip planning alongside hiking, cycling and local history.
