Syřenov: Kumburk, Hiking Routes and Cross-Country Skiing

Syřenov lies along the upper course of the Černá River, southeast of Lomnice nad Popelkou. Here, distinctive hills, castles and far-reaching viewpoints come together with hiking routes and winter cross-country skiing opportunities. This creates a destination where you can combine experiences in nature with historical discoveries in a variety of ways.

Kumburk and Bradlec: Castles on Distinctive Heights

At 643 m, Kumburk is one of the two distinctive hills in the area around Syřenov and is crowned by the ruins of Kumburk Castle. Kumburk Castle is a castle ruin with a viewing platform at the summit of the mountain of the same name. From there, you can see the Jičín region, the Podkrkonoší region, the Krkonoše Mountains and nearby parts of the Bohemian Paradise.

The ruins of Kumburk Castle can be reached from Syřenov by train or bus, followed by a 3 km-long yellow-marked hiking trail. Another historical destination is Bradlec Castle. It dates back to the 13th century and stands on a volcanic basalt hill at an elevation of 557 m. The two heights differ in their historical and landscape character: Kumburk combines castle ruins with a viewpoint, while Bradlec is associated with its medieval origins and volcanic basalt hill. Both places give a hike a clear cultural focus without requiring you to limit yourself to a single attraction.

Hiking Across Three Hills

The “Ze Syřenova přes tři kopce” route connects Kumburk, Bradlec, Kyje and Tábor via the Golden Trail in the Bohemian Paradise. It ends in Lomnice nad Popelkou; from there, you can return to Syřenov by train. As the route links four places and ends in Lomnice nad Popelkou, you can connect several historical and landscape highlights in a single hike. The train journey back connects the end of the route with its starting point. This means the route can be understood as a connection between several historical and landscape points rather than as a trip to just one viewpoint.

Cross-Country Skiing in Winter

In winter, you can join the Lomnická magistrála cross-country skiing route in Syřenov. Its main route follows the Golden Trail in the Bohemian Paradise and offers views of the Krkonoše Mountains, the Jizera Mountains and the Bohemian Paradise. The main circuit is 21 km long; including the side trails, the network covers more than 35 km. The main circuit therefore offers a clearly defined 21 km route, while those who include additional trails can choose a longer option from the network spanning more than 35 km.

A Small Cultural Highlight in the Village

Syřenov itself also has a historical landmark: the Kampelík House with a commemorative plaque is located here. Together with the castles and routes, it creates a village setting that combines excursions into the landscape with tangible traces of regional history.
