Studenec between Foothills and Weaving Tradition

Studenec combines a foothill landscape, textile history and vibrant local traditions. Studenec and Zálesní Lhota are foothill villages on the slopes of Stráž, a 630 m-high melaphyre hill in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains. If you would like to combine culture, nature and regional events, you will find different aspects of a Czech village here: historic buildings, preserved wooden houses, an educational trail and festivals with their own local character.

Church, Château and the Village of Weavers

The Neo-Romanesque Church of St John the Baptist in Studenec was built between 1866 and 1868. A pseudo-Renaissance château dating from 1883 stands next to the church. Traditional timber-framed wooden houses have been preserved mainly in Dolení konec, giving the village another historic facet.

Studenec’s textile past is also part of its identity. Nineteenth-century domestic textile production earned the village the nickname “Village of Weavers”. The Fejfar & Mládek weaving mill was founded in 1911 and developed into one of the most important textile companies in pre-war Czechoslovakia. During your visit, you can therefore combine sacred architecture, a château, rural building styles and industrial history.

Educational Trail, Geology and Winter Cross-Country Ski Trail

The school grounds in the centre of the village are home to a short but comprehensive educational trail route with an arboretum. It introduces visitors to the local living and non-living nature. Studenecký lom quarry is also an important geological site. Sports fields and facilities around Sokolovna are open to the public. In winter, a 1 km-long groomed cross-country ski trail with evening lighting runs directly beside Sokolovna.

Festivals with Their Own Local Tradition

Studenec is also shaped by recurring events. Posvícenský koláč is a cross-country race below Stráž held during Studenec’s harvest festival in mid-September. The race has already been held almost fifty times and attracts hundreds of participants every year. Studenecké míle is a recurring gathering of historic motor vehicles on the last Saturday in May; participants drive a route through the Podkrkonoší and the Krkonoše Mountains.

The pilgrimage in Studenec is celebrated at the end of June. Footballers from the sports club traditionally organise the sports programme and an evening entertainment event. The Studenec Volunteer Fire Brigade also organises an annual firefighters’ ball. At the traditional local event Obecní polévka, visitors could enjoy traditional village soup, Krkonošské sýkory and mulled wine, as well as other dishes, and buy local handmade products.
