Roztoky U Semil – Discover Nature and History
Roztoky u Semil combines landscape, trails and a multifaceted local history. The Údolà Vošmendy nature reserve lies in the Vošmenda valley along the western boundary of Roztoky u Semil. There is also an educational trail, historic craft traditions and special reminders of the rural past. This allows you to combine experiences in nature with cultural history without losing sight of the character of the place.
Hiking and Cycling in the Vošmenda Valley
The ÚdolÃm VoÅ¡mendy educational trail is a 5.5 km circular route that can be walked in either direction. The centre of Roztoky u Semil is a suitable starting point. Eleven information panels, rest areas, a play feature and interactive elements for children divide the loop into several stations. You can take breaks at the rest areas; the stations combine walking with short sections for reading, playing and observing.
Roztoky u Semil also offers clear reference points for navigating longer tours: blue- and green-marked hiking trails run through the village towards Vysoké nad Jizerou. Cycling Route No. 4173 also passes through Roztoky u Semil towards Jesenný. The circular route remains clearly defined at 5.5 km; the marked trails and cycling route lead from Roztoky u Semil in different directions. This provides options for planning a day trip, with both a clearly defined loop and trails leading towards various destinations.
Historic Mills and Local Craft Traditions
Roztoky u Semil was first mentioned in written records in 1356–1360. Traditional household occupations included weaving, glass cutting and threading beads. During the First Republic, several glass-cutting workshops were established there. Iron ore was also mined in Roztoky u Semil in the past. This former mining activity adds another field of work to the historic crafts.
The historic Roztocký Mill was established in 1656 and contains authentic milling equipment from the 17th to the 19th century. It is located in Fiedlerovo Valley on the Staroveský stream. Alongside the nature reserve, it thus provides a tangible reminder of how the landscape was used and worked in the past.
Rychta 1748 is a farmstead in Roztoky u Semil reconstructed in the traditional style. Visitors are welcome to view it. A visit to Rychta 1748 complements the milling equipment with an insight into agriculture.
