Chuchelna – between Kozákov and the Jizera

Chuchelna connects the summit of Kozákov with the Jizera river landscape in an unusual way: The municipality extends from the summit to the left bank of the river. This brings together a striking mountain landscape, geological features and viewpoints.

Hiking trails with a variety of destinations

Ten marked hiking trails lead to Kozákov, including the Zlatá stezka Českého ráje. One particularly specific hiking destination is the Kozákov educational trail: It leads to Drábovna through the Měsíční údolí valley and ends at the Radostná spring. This makes it possible to experience a tour not only via the summit, but also via the valley, educational trail and spring.

The geological history of the landscape is part of its character. Volcanic activity around 260 million years ago made Kozákov famous as a site where agates, jaspers and amethysts are found. Chuchelna is also an important part of the Český ráj Geopark, under UNESCO patronage. Those who want to do more than hike on an excursion and also appreciate the formation and distinctive features of the landscape will find a clear thematic focus here.

Viewpoints and activities at Kozákov

Krkavčí skála lies on the left bank of the Jizera, about 100 m above the river. The viewpoint is one of the seven geological stations of the Kozákov microregion; from there, the view extends into the Jizera Canyon and to the opposite Medenec. This combination of elevation, river valley and geological context makes the site a destination in its own right within the municipality.

The summit of Kozákov also offers several ways to make your stay more varied. At an altitude of 744 m, there are three paragliding launch sites on the west, south and north sides. The observation tower complements the summit experience: Its public viewing platform is 24 m high, can be reached via 124 steps and offers panoramic views. The tower has been open to the public since 22 April 1995.

Culture, cycling and seasonal excursions

The local culture includes the Chuchelna Calvary group, a Baroque sandstone work from 1734 that is registered as an immovable cultural monument. It depicts Christ on the cross, with the Sorrowful Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist on either side. This specific cultural and historical destination complements the nature and viewpoint experiences around Kozákov and the Jizera.

For cycling tours, cycle route 4176 runs through the administrative area of Chuchelna. Its route leads from Újezd pod Troskami via Rovensko pod Troskami, Bačov and Semily. Those who want to focus their stay more on seasonal activities will find a 450 m-long ski lift on the northern slope of Kozákov when there is sufficient snow. Koupaliště Chuchelna is an outdoor swimming pool with day tickets, providing another, different option for a day out.
