Burany: Mill, Trails and Mountain Landscape

Burany combines impressive cultural heritage with trails through meadows, forests, and mountain landscapes. Particularly significant is Janatův mlýn in Buřany: the mill lies in an enclosed valley of the Františkovský potok between the settlements of Františkov and Buřany in the Krkonoš Mountains. If you are looking for accommodation in Burany, you can plan your stay around a combination of historical discoveries and active outings.

Janatův mlýn and the History of Crafts

Janatův mlýn is an exceptionally well-preserved example of timbered folk architecture and one of the national cultural monuments in the Liberec Region. The complex preserves a complete milling system. This includes French millstones dating from 1767 and a fully functioning bread oven. The millstones and bread oven complement the timbered construction with preserved technical components of the milling operation.

Trails Through the Landscape and Mountains

The KRNAP route “Journey Through Crafts” leads from the Stráž viewpoint via Janatův Mlýn Buřany to the Stromkovická chapel. On this route, access to Janatův Mlýn initially follows the marked cycle path No. 4174 and then continues along trails through meadows and forest. Another option is a green-marked trail from Buřany, rising gently toward Mount Hejlov. The loop can continue along the green- and yellow-marked trails toward Františkov before returning to Buřany via the road. The change from the marked cycle path to meadow and forest trails gives the approach a two-part character. The Hejlov loop also includes the gentle ascent; the green and yellow trails lead toward Františkov, while the return to Buřany follows the road.

At the Kašparka riding station in Buřany, guided rides are available for one to three riders. The rides complement the marked trails and the gentle ascent to Hejlov with a different way of getting around.

Opening on Special Dates

Events held throughout the year during which Janatův mlýn is open to the public usually include Dřevosochání and Kovosochání na Háskově, Adventní pečení perníčků, and Dny lidové architektury. During Františkovské dřevosochání, Janatův mlýn is usually open. Guided tours can also be arranged directly with the owner for another date. For a visit, it is therefore useful to distinguish between an event date and an individually arranged tour.
