Soutice between Rivers and Local History

Soutice is a destination for travelers who want to combine local history with a distinctive landscape feature. The confluence of the Želivka and Sázava rivers is located in Soutice. This gives the town two clear points of focus: its riverscape and its cultural history. You can choose your focus depending on whether you want to center your visit on the river confluence, historical landmarks or both topics.

Historical Traces in the Town

The Church of Saint James the Greater in Soutice is first mentioned in 1363. The Soutice château complex is listed as a cultural monument. Both landmarks represent the town’s long history, without reducing Soutice to a single attraction.

The Muzeum Soutice is housed in a reconstructed 18th-century granary, which has been protected as a cultural monument since July 29, 2020. The museum presents the town’s history through historical photographs, the furnishings of the former post office and the municipal chronicle. The exhibition about Soutice Château covers the château owners and Ema Destinnová. The collection thus combines architectural history, notable personalities and everyday life in the town. Visitors interested in architectural history will find the reconstructed granary and the exhibition about the château owners there. Those looking for local everyday history will encounter the furnishings of the former post office and the municipal chronicle.

Special details include a fired brick bearing the coat of arms of the Zahn family from the former Soutice brickworks. The writer JUDr. Vojtěch Zamarovský is also buried in the Soutice cemetery. The brick adds the former Soutice brickworks to the museum’s themes; the cemetery adds a biographical site.

Water, Trail and Regional Tradition

The Umrlčí cesta trail, restored in 2017, has four rest areas with seating: Kukátko, Okno do duše a krajiny, Zvonička and Svatá trojice. At the beginning of the Umrlčí cesta trail, near the access road to the D1 motorway, there are wooden amenities and an information board; they are intended for rest and refreshment. The trail complements the cultural focus with time spent outdoors, without requiring a specific type of outing.

Water also remains a theme at the Muzeum Soutice. The “Voda Želivka” exhibition shows the journey of drinking water from a reservoir to Prague. The traditional Silvestrovský pochod in Soutice provides another connection to the confluence: it leads to the confluence of the Želivka and Sázava rivers; it is documented for December 31, 2025.

The museum granary, the church and the château complex represent different historical sites. The Umrlčí cesta trail adds four outdoor seats, while the riverscape takes center stage at the confluence. The Silvestrovský pochod connects the river site with a local tradition.
