Chmelná combines the hilly landscape of Central Bohemia with a long local history and vibrant local traditions. The place has been documented since the Middle Ages; the first written mention dates back to 1375. This creates a varied selection for planning your trip, ranging from village history and religious buildings to walks in the surrounding area and recurring annual events.

Village Square, History and Notable Chapels

One of Chmelná’s defining landmarks is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk on the village square. It was built and consecrated in 1883. A complete restoration took place in 1998, after which the chapel was reconsecrated by Bishop Václav Malý.

Another special feature is located near Pravonín: the Jewish cemetery is 3 km west of Chmelná. There is a grave there connected with the ancestors of Gustav Mahler from the local Jewish community. This site adds a regional historical context to the village’s history, distinct from the chapels and ecclesiastical traditions.

Hilly Landscape and Destinations in Nature

Chmelná is situated in the typical hilly landscape of Central Bohemia at an elevation of 481 m above sea level. The Blaník Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Blaník) lies 4.5 km to the southwest. Those who consider different excursion directions when choosing accommodation can combine local history with experiences in nature and walks in the surrounding area, without losing sight of the character of a rural stay. The protected landscape southwest of the village provides a clear contrast to the historical destinations in Chmelná.

The spring chapel of the Holy Trinity stands in Horky Forest. It was built in 1929 by the Catholic Youth Association and restored in 2012. A service is held at the spring chapel on the Feast of the Holy Trinity. At the same time, it is a popular destination for excursions and walks throughout the year. Thus, alongside the buildings in the village, there is a separate place to visit in a forest landscape. The spring chapel therefore connects a natural setting with religious tradition: Horky Forest is its location, the service belongs to a specific feast day, and as an excursion destination it is not limited to that date.

Local Festivals and Musical Tradition

A pond is drained and its fish harvested annually below Chmelná. In Chmelná itself, a fish festival is held every year. Both events are recurring features of the village. The Chmelařinka Chapel ensemble has also been active in Chmelná since 1967 and performs at local celebrations and dances. Historical sites, religious events and community gatherings thus come together within a manageable local setting. The pond fish harvest and the fish festival create two distinct focal points: the pond is located below Chmelná, while the festival takes place in the village itself.
